Come to Church or Come to Jesus

1 09 2007

Based upon a few conversations that I have been having lately, I have been thinking about a very important distinction, and it comes as it pertains to inviting people to church. While I am a big fan of telling people to invite like crazy, this is really a product of my passion about what God is doing at Word of Faith, but I also know that it can be mis-represented to mean that the church (the building), has some power in it. The reality is, that we should be inviting people to come to Christ and not just inviting people to come to the church… In many instances, inviting people to come to our church buildings is truly little more than an excuse not to be the church and live a life that would draw people to Christ. When we ask people to come to “church”, we should be doing as the woman did at the well by saying, “come see a man” (John 4:29), or as John the Baptist said in John 1:15 and say, “This was he of whom I spake”. In both of these instances, we see people fired up to bring people not to the building, but to Jesus, and this was based upon their experience with him.

It is my desire, that as you tell people about Word of Faith, it is in the context of you telling people about Jesus and that it is birthed from your desire to lift him up and not lift up the building. It is my desire, that as we live our life, people will want to have what we have, and desire to be in the environment where we are spiritually fed, and at that point your invitation will foster a passion for people to come meet Jesus, and for those in the church to continue to make the name of Jesus famous.

I agree with you totally. My home is a church. My office is a church. The church is not the source of the power, it’s where Gods word lives.

When someone has a need, I don’t say come over on sunday and we’ll take care of that, I say let’s handle it right now.

(I’ve been reading from the beginning of this blog working toward the more recent stuff and i like where it’s heading.)

In my view, when we make the church building the source of all of our answers, then we are no longer pointing people towards Jesus, we point then towards us and our programs and in a way we are thinking more highly of ourselves than we should think….
