Why Don’t People Come To Church

30 10 2008

I just got finished watching a video where they went around and asked people why they do not come to church. The responses of the people were very interesting, and I thought that I would put a post up on the blog to allow people to sound off about why they think people do not come to church. I have said it before and I will say it again: I think we have the best message, but we also seem to struggle in many respects to get that message to take hold. What barriers do you see, what do you think needs to be fixed? Be honest so that change can really take place in the body of Christ…

I feel that people don’t come to church because the people who are in the church do not display the love of Christ or they joke around when they should be being serious. There have been several occasions when I have witnessed things being said about other people who are in the church that were not very loving. I have also witnessed times where people are obviously making what seems to be a “mockery” (just breaking out singing church hymns during service when we don’t sing hymns, dancing like carlton, etc. )of church during church services when we have visitors who are there for the first time, or at any time. Either way it is unappropriate. From the expressions on their face and the fact that they walked out as soon as service was over displays the fact that they were turned off. Honestly if some of the things that I have seen would have happened the first time that I came to the church, I would not have come back. There is a time and a place for everything and there is nothing wrong with a little joke here or there, but many times the jokes are just not something that should happen during the church service. That is a huge turnoff not only for me, but other people who have noticed the same thing. When the people who are supposed to be the leaders do not get up and present a good image you can’t expect the people in the congregation to be serious or take you seriously. Also when visitors come in and see the leaders gossiping and being loud before church service it does not set a good example either. As leaders we should set the example for others.
